Anne Curtis, Sssssuper Ka!

Anong training ang ginawa mo for this movie?

I did Pekiti Tirsia Kali (the only Filipino Martial Arts recognized by the Philippine Army, Marines, PNP and other special forces units). I trained with the Scout Rangers of the Philippines. The training was very gruesome. It was very hard. I’ve never had to run at least 5 kilometers with 25 pounds of sand in my backpack while holding a gun and singing with yung chant nila. They do this every morning. That’s how they train. So it was really inspiring, it set the mood of the film for me.

Paano mo na-survive?

We actually did this film for two years. In the

beginning that was my first hit in the face by a stuntman. I’ve never been hit or punched before ever. And the first time was by a man. He didn’t mean it naman. I didn’t wanna cry because everyone on set was a guy. So you don’t wanna be girlie. Parang kinokontrol ko. At noong day one nasuka ako sa hirap. And you know what, after two years kahit madapa ka or you get bruised naging parang balewala na siya. You just get used to it. Masakit pero fun.

Kumusta yung special screening n’yo sa New York?

Yeah, I just came from New York Asian Film Festival, where we had the world premiere of BuyBust. It was also the US premiere of “Sid and Aya: Not a Lovestory.” It was an honor to be able to represent two Filipino films in the New York Asian Film Festival. But we were very excited to premiere BuyBust there. Actually, if you google all the reviews, there were.. with the likes of Variety, the Hollywood Reporter, Asia Movie Pulse... so many positive reviews came for that screening.

Naging emotional ka daw doon sa New York?

Yes, you know, as I mentioned earlier it was two years of filming. So, after watching everything in two hours, we’re kinda emotional. And I wasn’t the only one crying ha! This guy beside me (Brandon Vera) was crying also. I think the question to us was, “How did it feel shooting this film?” And I was just “huhuhu, it was so hard.”

Was there a moment you felt like giving up?

No, never. Maybe one moment that I doubted that I could do the scenes, but there was not one moment that I wanted to give up.

Would you consider this as the highlight of your career, so far?

This is the hardest film I have ever had to shoot in my life. I never shot a film for two years and this is my first action film, as well. It’s also the first time I made international rounds with the screenings of BuyBust at the New York Asian Film Festival and the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival in South Korea. So, this is definitely the highlight for me because I also have the chance to work with Brandon and Arjo Atayde with Erik Matti. You know, the first time I got to work with Direk Matti was 21 years ago for my very first film “Magic Kingdom”. He was an assistant director then and he was the very first director to give me an acting workshop. And now we’re doing a film together. So, it’s definitely a highlight of my 21 years in the industry.

Paano napunta itong project sa `yo?

So after “Bakit Lahat ng Gwapo May Boyfriend” in 2016 hindi ko na nagustohan yung mga scripts that were falling into my lap. Medyo kinukulit na ako ng Viva “bakit hindi ka nagmo-movie?” Because there’s not any film that is really fitting to me. That’s why Boss Vincent (Vic del Rosario of Viva) mentioned na parang he was in Hong Kong with Sir Dondon (Monteverde) and Erik Matti. He brought up this film of a female protagonist doing an action film and he asked: “is that something you would like?” I said that sounds interesting. So, right there and then, he called Erik Matti and when Direk pitched it over to me over the phone, it was an instant “Yes I wanna do this.” Because I felt it was a role I’ve never done before and I knew it would challenge me. True enough, it certainly challenged me, physically, mentally and emotionally.
