Drug personality gunned down in Silay

A DRUG personality was gunned down by two unidentified assailants on a motorcycle in Barangay Balaring, Silay City, Negros Occidental, on July 28.

Killed was Bernie Silva of Plaridel Luna, Barangay 1.

Superintendent Noel Polines, city police chief, said Silva was standing on the roadside when the two assailants arrived around 9 a.m.

The victim asked them who they were looking for when suddenly one of them fired at the victim at close range.

Silva managed to run and hide at one of the houses in the area but the gunman followed him and shot him again twice. The perpetrators then fled.

He sustained three gunshot wounds to his abdomen and both legs.

He was rushed to a hospital, where he was declared dead.

Police recovered ammunition, four fired cartridges, and three slugs of .45 caliber pistol from the scene.

Polines said Silva's activities might have been monitored by the perpetrators since they knew that the victim often goes in the said village.

He said they are eyeing two angles as the motives of the killing, grudge or mistaken identity.

Polines said the victim was possibly mistaken as an informant of the police following the raid in Barangay Balaring last May that resulted in the apprehension of Junray Jumatay and recovery of P910,000 worth of illegal drugs.

Jumatay, Mark Velasco, and two others were subjects of a search warrant, however, Velasco was able to escape while the two others were not present during the operation.

Police have no lead yet on the identities of the perpetrators.
