Shabu found inside Bilibid prison

AUTHORITIES recovered several grams of methamphetamine hydrochloride (shabu) inside the maximum security compound of the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City.

The recovery came after an operation personally spearheaded by Bureau of Corrections (Bucor) Director Oscar Calderon was conducted inside the jail.

Accompanied by NBP officials and personnel as well as several sniffing dogs, Calderon confiscated 30 grams of a white powdery substance allegedly shabu from one Peter Co who was serving time following his conviction on drug charges by a local court

The operation took several hours to complete as the jail personnel searched the maximum security compound where Co and several other drug convicts were imprisoned.

Co was incarcerated at the Cell No 2, Building 8 of the maximum security compound in the national penitentiary.

Authorities said they also recovered similar substance (six plastic sachets) from five other Chinese nationals at Building 5-A and Building 2 though they have yet to identify the said prisoners.

About 11,000 inmates are currently detained at the NBP, including 111 Chinese and Chinese-Filipino nationals and 182 of other nationalities.

The operation was carried after jail authorities received information about an alleged pot session happening right inside Co’s detention cell.

Calderon said they will conduct a thorough investigation on the incident, adding that they will spare no one in their campaign against such illegal activities right inside the country’s main penitentiary.

He also warned of possible administrative and criminal charges against jail personnel if they are found in connivance with the inmates. (AH/Sunnex)
