Taculing chosen as pilot area for waste segregation program

BARANGAY Taculing of Bacolod City will be the pilot area for the implementation of “no segregation, no collection” policy of the city government.

This, after newly-elected Liga ng mga Barangay president Lady Gles Gonzales of Barangay Taculing has accepted the proposal of Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran that their village will be the pilot area for the waste segregation program.

Gonzales said that the plan was discussed to her by Familiaran after the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections in May.

Familiaran, chairman of Solid Waste Action Team (Swat), had earlier said that the city’s waste segregation program is a failure because residents are still not observing the proper ways of disposing of garbage.

He said Barangay Taculing has several subdivisions and they will observe it for one to three months as a pilot barangay.

The Swat team already forwarded the lists of 42 erring villages to the Environment Management Board (EMB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

These are Barangays 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 16, 17, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 29, 30, 32, 35, 38, 39, 40, Alijis, Banago, Bata, Cabug, Estefania, Felisa, Granada.

The EMB-DENR was tasked to impose the penalty to the erring villages for violations of waste segregation in relation to the implementation of the Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Program.

Gonzales said it’s a big challenge to be the pilot barangay in waste segregation program.

“We will double our effort and this time, we will perform much better to be the top model barangay in Bacolod,” she said.

She added they are now preparing the campaign materials for waste segregation and she already talked with the city’s garbage hauler IPM-Construction and Development Corporation.

Gonzales noted they will form a solid waste management team and enforcers to monitor the violators.

“Hopefully, with the cooperation of our residents, we can adjust and achieve our goal,” Gonzales said.

Moreover, Gonzales also vowed to address the high number of dengue cases in Barangay Taculing.

This year, Barangay Taculing was among the barangays with the highest number of dengue cases.

Gonzales said she formed a dengue committee to address the problem, especially in Purok Lirio.

“We conducted a study and clean-up drive to reduce the number of dengue cases. It’s a big challenge for us,” she said.
