Editorial: No mercy

SOME 401 employees of the Bacolod Our Lady of Mercy Specialty Hospital (BOLMSH) officially lose their jobs on July 31 after the Philippine Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) failed to re-accredit the hospital.

PhilHealth earlier denied the accreditation of BOLMSH, considered by many as the “hospital for the poor,” due to fraudulent activities in the previous years under the former management, Tiong Bi Inc.

It was supposed to shut down its operations on June 30 but was extended for one month due to the intervention of the City Government.

The PhilHealth has yet to act on the motion for reconsideration submitted by the hospital management.

The grace period for the hospital to operate is up. Time has run out for the affected employees.

The community is affected as well.

Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia earlier met with the hospital management and the PhilHealth executives and told them to explore all avenues to prevent a disruption of health care services and even loss of jobs.

But apparently, health care services were disrupted, jobs were lost.

The 401 workers were told they will receive a separation pay of 15 days per year for the five years that Negros Healthcare Management Systems Inc. has managed the hospital, no matter how long their respective tenure is with the hospital.

The hospital workers and the community are the collateral damage here.
