Exercise: A habit of the wealthy

GOOD day, all! I came across a very interesting statistic last week. It showed that 76 percent of wealthy people do some sort of exercise on most days of the week, compared to that of 24 percent of poor people. Author Tom Corley spent most of his career studying the habits of rich people.

Why is this so? Wealthier people tend to think of “opportunity luck” and along with their exercise regimens, eat a healthy diet, sleep at least seven hours each night, limit alcohol intake and seldom watch TV. In fact, after interviewing one wealthy 68-year-old man (described as having an annual income of $160,000 or above), Corley asked him when he will retire. His answer? After exercising and living healthily for the past 45 years, the man knew that his highest earning years would come later on in life, hence his lack of enthusiasm for retiring early. Clearly, when we take care of our body early on in life, we can expect to be more productive as we age.

Why do the wealthy exercise?

1) Exercising daily teaches us willpower and delayed gratification.

2) We need health to seize opportunity luck; after all it’s much easier to work healthy than on a sickbed.

3) Apparently, recent studies show that exercise is brain candy. When we do aerobic exercise we get more oxygen to our brains.

4) Exercise has been shown to increase concentration, memory and mental agility, crucial mental traits needed to succeed in business and professional life.

5) Daily exercise teaches consistency in our habits, and consistent good habits over time apply to other aspects in our daily lives.

The rich understand that health is wealth and take a proactive role in securing their health for the future of their family, business and community. What are you doing for your health today?
