THE Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in Negros Occidental has intensified its security measures following the two separate explosions in Basilan and Masbate last week.
Lieutenant Senior Grade Jimmy Vingno, head of PCG-Negros Occidental, said they are monitoring all seaports in the province through a proactive approach, which focuses on preventive measures.
"We are on heightened alert," Vingno said, adding they maximize the deployment of Coast Guard personnel in ports for a strengthened security presence.
On July 31, a bomb planted in a white van exploded during a military checkpoint near Magkawit detachment in Lamitan City, Basilan, killing the suspected bomber, a soldier, four paramilitary troopers and four civilians, including a mother and her child.
The following day, an improvised explosive device went off at the port of Masbate City, damaging one of the motor bancas.
Vingno said a quick response team manned by five personnel from K9 team, Special Operations Group, and Explosive Ordnance Disposal team is activated to immediately respond to any untoward incidents.
Coast Guard personnel will also conduct a strict inspection on all passengers while they provide assistance to them.
All baggage will also be thoroughly checked.
Vingno advised passengers to be vigilant and be alert at all times.
He urged them to immediately report to the authorities if they sighted suspicious persons or activities. (GYM)
