Viray: Tale of two Eds

DO YOU know that Angeles used to be a part of San Fernando? It was known as Barrio Culiat.

It happens that San Fernando and Angeles are led by mayors by the nickname of Ed (EdSa) and Ed (EdPam).

EdSa

Edwin started as a hesitant politician after the EDSA Revolution in 1986. He was appointed as OIC councilor. Then he was elected in his own right as councilor along with Mayor Pat Guevarra. He served the maximum of nine years (three terms).

He wanted to shy away from politics but he was persuaded by Oca to be his running mate. He served for three terms (nine years) as vice-mayor.

In 2013, he was elected as the mayor of the City of San Fernando, in his own right. In 2016, he made history as the first unopposed candidate reelectionist mayor. His rise is nothing short of phenomenal. He has improved his ways of including but not limited to speaking by leaps and bounds.

EdSa is authoritative in speed and actions. He has initiated the construction of the tourism road in Del Rosario. He has been proclaimed as a Hall of Famer – Outstanding Mayor. Under his term, San Fernando is a haven for investment. SM has 3 big stores – Poblacion, Jose Abad Santos Avenue (near NLEx) and Telabastagan. Megaworld is breaking grounds in the area used to be known as PASUDECO.

Hotels and event centers have mushroomed in the city.

Orchids and Bendix are flourishing. LausGroup Event Centre has hosted several blockbusters of a concert. Kingsborough is right on track. The Forum is to follow suit. The economic boom in San Fernando is credited to a large extent to the management style of EdSa.

EdSa has remained humble despite his success. He knows every family in San Fernando. It is said that you give a man wealth or power; if he does not changed, he is a real man. Based on his norm, EdSa has proven to be a real person.

As a leader, he has institutionalized changes at the San Fernando City Hall.

The city is like a smooth business venture by a Chief Executive Officer who empowers his executives.

The heads of offices are given powers to act responsively so they are respected.

It’s no wonder that it’s almost October when candidates shall file their certificates of candidacy and yet no one is likely to oppose EdSa.

EdPam

EdPam is a human rights lawyer. He is a handsome figure in human rights rally during the later years of martial law. It was clear that he had the DNA for public service being the son of the legendary Vice Mayor Alberto Pamintuan. When Mt. Pinatubo erupted, the crisis served as opportunity for men of good will like EdPam. As the acting mayor of Angeles City, he rose from the sphinx of ashes to lead the Angeleños.

He has proven his mettle. He has been proclaimed world class mayor. He has been acknowledged as the president of the city mayors all over the country. He has made the adjustments from the dependencies to the American to the present independent/ nationalist economy. Angeles City is on verge of reaching a two billion budget.

The city colleges and city hospitals stand as solid proofs that EdPam’s legacies shall stand the test of time.

EdPam is the only politician I know who was on the right side on the candidates for the presidential/ vice presidential election in 2016. He campaigned for President Duterte – a Bedan like himself. He sided with Leni Robredo. He supported a mixed ticket and both candidates won. He is unlike some turncoats.

It is a sad consequence that his name was included in the narco-list. Angeles knows better –that this man hates drugs. You cannot put a good man down. He is clear of narcotics and he has never protected drug traders.

San Fernando and Angeles cities are two lucky cities with mayors EdSa and EdPam.
