City to ban disposable plastic items

THE Davao City Government will ban the use of disposable plastic items such as drinking cups to minimize plastic pollution.

Davao City Administrator Zuleika T. Lopez said the ban will be implemented during meetings, conferences, and other events.

She encouraged department heads to bring their own cups during meetings to avoid the use of plastics, including water bottles.

“It has been found out that much of the garbage generated is composed of plastics and all forms of (it). The City Government of Davao is coming up with a policy to ban the use of plastic,” Lopez said.

Interface Development Interventions, Inc. executive director Chinkie Golle, for her part, said the ban would help reduce the volume of plastic waste in the city.

“We are really happy that Atty. Lopez and the CDC-Execom agreed when we presented this policy,” she said.

An endorsement letter from the Davao City Planning and Development Coordination (CDC) was sent to Councilor Diosdado Mahipus, Sr., chair of the committee on city environment and natural resources, last August 6, 2018, stating the request for “the members of the City Council to enact an ordinance banning the use of single-use plastics and encouraging the reusable alternatives in meetings.”

Gollee said they are hoping the ban would be implemented city-wide and cover all private events or gatherings.
