THOUGH it won’t have the international flavor of Xterra or Ironman, expect the same world-class experience in the National Age Group Triathlon (NAGT) 2018 on Oct. 7 on the Naga City Boardwalk.

“We want to bring better standards of triathlon here in Cebu. We want to be better or on the same level with the top triathlon organizers. We will try to give the Philippines international race standards,” said one of the organizers, Paul Jake Castillo, in a press conference at the Grillers Steakhouse.

Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP) is partnering with TSE Live Inc. for the first time to hold the first triathlon in Naga City.

“When we went to Naga, we saw the road, the boardwalk, the sea, it was the perfect standard distance race,” said Tonyson Lee, one of the organizers. “The road is perfect, it’s a perfect bike route, that means there’s no problem with the run. When we saw Naga, we fell in love with the place.”

Lee said that Naga Mayor Kristine Chiong welcomed and assured that the NAGT will be one of the highlights of the Naga City’s fiesta month.

Though it’s the first time for Naga City to hold a triathlon of this magnitude, City Administrator Arthur Villanueva assured that Naga City will do everything to help the organizers make this a successful event.

“We have just hosted huge sports activities. We know this is a different level and we are excited. The organizers will have all our support,” he said.

The race is limited to around 400 participants to minimize congestion and to give the triathletes a better race experience.

“We will never sacrifice quality over quantity,” said TRAP president Tom Carrasco.

The event has three distances--the standard, sprint and super sprint.

The standard distance has a a 1.5km swim, a 40km bike and a 10km run. It will have the elite open, age group, team competition and relay divisions. The sprint distance covers a 750m swim and a 20km bike and will have elite junior, AG Junior and AG Adult divisions. The super sprint distance covres a 500m swim, a 14km bike and a 2.5km run and is only for boys and girls ages 13 to 15. (EKA)
