Armed men try to take control of Mactan resort; 2 hurt

CEBU (Updated) -- Two persons were injured when over 30 armed men stormed the Mactan Isla Resort and Casino in Barangay Agus, Lapu-Lapu City, on Friday dawn, August 10.

Lapu-Lapu City Police Office Director Lemuel Obon said 33 armed men, who were identified as security guards of Proceed Security Agency, were brought to the Lapu-Lapu police station for questioning.

They reportedly came from Cagayan de Oro City and were hired by a Korean national identified only as a certain Mr. Park. They stormed the resort around 3:30 a.m. in an attempt to take control of the place.

Ownership and management of the resort are the subject of an ongoing legal dispute. Both parties are Korean nationals.

The men disarmed the resort's security personnel, but a shootout happened when some security guards fired at them, said Obon.

One of those injured was retired Army lieutenant Alberto Elola, who reportedly led the Proceed squad and suffered from a gunshot wound in his trunk. The other injured person had yet to be identified as of Friday night.

A total of 22 firearms were seized, including high-powered ones from the gunmen who had arrived in a white van.

Obon said that the armed men might face malicious mischief, alarm and scandal, and obstruction of justice charges. Thirty-three of them were escorted to the police station where they were photographed and their fingerprints were recorded. They were subjected to a paraffin test.

Fourteen security guards from the other company, Blue Breed, were also asked to take a paraffin test to find out if anyone among them had fired a gun.

Obon said that four Special Weapons and Tactics operatives were sent to the hotel to help secure it, but that the status quo would be observed in terms of the management. (With reports from FVQ of Superbalita Cebu/SunStar Philippines)
