PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte has advised warring factions of the ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) to end their spat, Special Assistant to the President Christopher Lawrence Go said Friday, August 10.

Go said Duterte, chair of the PDP-Laban, met with both factions led by Senator Aquilino Pimentel III and lawyer Rogelio Garcia to patch up their differences.

Pimentel serves as president of one PDP-Laban faction, while Garcia, Duterte's law school classmate, assumed leadership of another faction.

Duterte met with the rival groups at Diamond Hotel in Manila on Thursday, August 9, in an attempt to unify them.

Photos from Go showed Duterte met separately with the two groups before talking to them together in one room.

Go said Duterte reminded the leaders of both factions and the other PDP-Laban members to avoid animosity and ensure that unity will prevail.

Go said in a statement.

(Just like a father who wants his children to settle their differences if there is a misunderstanding, President Rodrigo Duterte also mediated between PDP-Laban members who are at odds to unite them for the betterment of the party.)

(He encouraged the leaders of both groups to prioritize the welfare of the countrymen in every decision that they will make.)

Go said both factions had promised Duterte to address the conflict within the party.

"The caucus ended with a commitment from both sides to work things out," he said.

Go said Duterte would hold another meeting with the two groups "with hopes of having a stronger and united PDP-Laban party."

In a radio interview, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque Jr. said the second meeting was scheduled in September.

(In September, there will be another caucus. And if they could not settle their differences, they could dissociate. But now, he said the party members should first talk.) (SunStar Philippines)
