Oro taps 'tanods' to augment security for Higalaay festival

TO HELP maintain peace and order, barangay tanods in Cagayan de Oro will be deployed to the city streets during the Higalaay festival.

Oliver Egypto, city barangay coordinator of the Office for Community Affairs (OCA), said over thousands of barangay tanods will serve as force multipliers to the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (Cocpo).

They will also be ordered to strengthen security measures in the community level, he said.

Egypto said they will help enforce city laws and rules, including the City Local Environment and Natural Resources Office's (Clenro) target to achieve a garbage-free Higalaay festival.

Initially, about 200 barangay tanods were trained on the basics of citizen’s arrest and arresting techniques, among others during a three-day basic orientation which started Thursday, August 9.

During the three-day training, participants are expected to learn the basics on patrol operation, citizen’s arrest and arresting technique, traffic operation, intelligence gathering, crime scene protection and preservation, gender sensitivity, among others.

This after the City Government set a criteria in selecting barangay tanods to strengthen community-based programs and citizens’ involvement in maintaining peace and order in the barangay level.

A barangay shall have at least 20 tanods, but the number could increase depending on the size of the barangay.
