THERE’S something about eating ice cream that makes a terrible day seem bearable. Just a lick or a spoonful of this frozen dessert is enough to lift someone’s spirits. Both children and adults find reason to indulge in this sweet treat, which has ways of soothing the senses. Over the years, I’ve even met lots of adults who fill their freezers with tubs of ice cream—their go-to treat when capping off a stressful day.

But consuming too much ice cream, which contains generally high amounts of sugar, also puts one’s health at risk. When consumed on a daily basis, this may lead to weight gain, increased sugar levels, and kidney damage.

With the wide-range of ice cream flavors sold everywhere, the temptation to try everything becomes irresistible. Fortunately, here in Davao City, there are now establishments that promote healthy ice cream for those who wish to regulate their sugar intake.

Scrapes

Located in the SM Lanang Premier food hall, Premium Scrapes Stir-Frost Deli offers rolled ice cream that’s rich in calcium, iron, and Vitamin C. Unlike regular fried ice cream, Scrapes boasts of their 90% less sugar ice cream. This is ideal for people who cannot completely give up ice cream yet are compelled to avoid sweet food.

For P120, you can enjoy one cup with a serving size of 50 grams. Aside from their best-selling Mango Extreme flavor, Scrapes has pineapple, banana, strawberry, grapes, kiwi, green tea matcha, cookies and cream, graham kinder, peanut butter, choco mudpie, and salted caramel.

Gelato on the Road. You can find the stall of this vegan gelato in Victoria Plaza and Gaisano Mall. Perfect for people who are lactose-intolerant, the Gelato on the Road is the first in Davao City to serve dairy-free ice cream. You can choose from a variety of flavors such as nutella, moringa, food for the gods, mango float, blueberry, salted caramel, strawberry, vanilla, durian, and cappuccino.

For only P80 per cup, you can try the gluten-free treat which is produced using 100-percent natural ingredients.

Paniza Organic Ice Cream

A visit to the Roxas Night Market wouldn’t be complete without trying the black ice cream from Paniza. This is impossible to miss since most of the crowds that flock to their stall leave clutching cones topped with scoops of black ice cream.

Aside from its detoxifying properties, the charcoal activated ice cream is believed to lower cholesterol levels, prevent formation of cavities, and speed up metabolism. You can enjoy a generous serving of the flavor for only P20 per cone.

Establishments that offer low-sugar and vegan ice cream are rare to find. So with the August holidays fast approaching, you can plan which healthy ice cream to sample and ultimately make it your next favorite.
