Abrigo: A wake-up call to protect countryside teachers

A PUBLIC school teacher assigned in the hinterlands of Surigao del Norte was molested by a construction worker who got into her house before dawn of on August 3, 2018, sources said.

The teacher is one among the many in the countryside who sacrificed a lot with unselfish devotion to service, even to the isolated barangay, if only to impart education. Isolated in this context means you have to cross 2 rivers with a skylab or habal-habal on about 14-kilometer partially concreted road from the town, unstable supply of electricity and intermittent cellular signal.

To assault an educator is tantamount to not valuing education at all and only done by barbarian who refused to get out from the shell of ignorance. I could not blame the parents of this morally corrupted mammal for lack of training at home, my informant told me; he is the only asshole among the bunch. Besides, at age 39, schooled or not, our intuitive mind can obviously distinguish between right and wrong, unless one opt to challenge his conscience.

I am not sure how many spirits out of seven were trapped in his body in committing the crime. Whoever he is, the long arm of the law will not spare him.

On the soft side, while I condemn wrongdoings in strongest term, I also recognize with gratitude the efforts of barangay chairman Arturo Lumpay and councilors Maricel Galagar, Roldan Bacol and Emelia Jamil. All of them have just rolled-up their sleeves for a fresh term. And the incident was a litmus test of their sugary words during the campaign.

I also salute PO2 Charlote Bucod who assisted and secured the victim; and the whole Sison police under the command of PSI June Hontanosas, hats off kami sa inyo Sirs! To the DepEd officials who expedite the endorsement to transfer the teacher if only to live in a normal life, safe and dignified, Drs. Nelia Lomocso, Laila Danaque, and Dominico Larong Jr., Madams Rosa Fe Bacol, Letecia Ferrol, Atty. Richard Dano, and Raquel Dialde who shared sentiment to the victim.

To all of you, thank you very much. (abrigodann@gmail.com)
