Editorial: Avoiding that sea of trash

LAST week we saw photos and videos of trash being thrown back to land by large waves in Metro Manila. Images also showed how trash was being lumped together near the shore. Other images showed piles of trash floating in the flood.

While the image is horrifying, Davao City is not exempt from this scenario.

For quite some time now, SunStar Davao photojournalists have taken multiple photos of some areas in the city where there is no proper waste management.

For instance, it can be noted that below some of the stilt houses along the shore have piles of trash under it. One of the photos by our photojournalist showed an image of a child with his bike in a shoreline that is littered with trash.

This is not only the area in Davao City where trash is piling up. When you walk home, you might have noticed that there are some areas -- not the pick-up point for the garbage collectors -- where trash is piling up.

When you ride a boat to Samal Island or go island hopping, trash are seen floating on the water.

Should Davao City experience something similar to what happened in Metro Manila, then there is the possibility that we would see piles trash being thrown by the ways back to shore or floating in the flood.

Keeping our surroundings clean is not always the job of the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro). The bulk of that job is on us, the people living in the area.

It is time that we become more mindful of the amount of trash we generate as individuals or groups. We should be responsible enough to not throw any trash along the street, into the river, into the sea, or at the vacant lot near your neighborhood. Some of us may think that throwing a small candy wrapper will not cause any harm but if thrown by 1,000 persons that is already a lot.

If we want to keep Davao City's image as one of the cleanest cities in the country, we should become better caretakers of the environment. We should not only practice this in the city but also wherever we go to.

By being responsible stewards to the environment, we can prevent the horrifying scenario that happened in Metro Manila.
