Monsoon damage hits P36M in infra, crops

OVER P36 million worth of infrastructure and crops were damaged by the heavy monsoon rains in Cagayan and Cordillera regions, the National Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported Wednesday, August 15.

In a report, the NDRRMC said that as of 6 a.m. of August 15, P33.5 million worth of infrastructure including roads, bridges and other structures were damaged in the provinces of Batanes and Nueva Vizcaya while over P2.8 million worth of crops such as rice, corn and cassava as well as livestock were destroyed in the provinces of Mt. Province and Abra.

It said a total of 409 houses were either damaged or destroyed in Central Luzon, Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon) and Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).

“A total of 36 road sections were affected in Regions 1,2,3, Calabarzon and CAR. As of 14 August 2018, a total of 19 road sections were reported passable,” the NDRRMC said.

Parts of the country, particularly the Ilocos Region, Central Luzon, National Capital Region and Calabarzon, were battered by the effects of the enhanced southwest monsoon since Friday evening, August 10.

The NDRRMC said nearly 700,000 families were affected by the weather disturbance and as of August 15, 102, 211 persons or 23,121 families remained in evacuation centers due to the continuous flooding in their areas.

It said 656 areas were flooded in the Ilocos Region, Calabarzon, and NCR although flooding in the 133 areas have already subsided.

Three people died while one was missing.

Meanwhile, the NDRRMC said a total of P27.861 million worth of assistance from the Department of Social Welfare and Development and local government units have been provided to the families in the affected areas. (SunStar Philippines)
