MAASIN City in Southern Leyte celebrated on Wednesday, August 15, its fiesta with local officials and residents thanking its patroness, Our Lady of Assumption, for the blessings and progress in the city.

“As we celebrate our Patronal Town Fiesta and 50th Jubilee celebration, let us take this opportunity to thank God for all the blessings we have received in the past years. He had been very good to us and he continuously showers his blessings to us,” said Mayor Nacional Mercado.

The city launched various socio-cultural and religious activities for the visitors during the celebration, with His Eminence Cardinal Tagle officiating the Jubilee mass.

“Let us continue to trust him, so that we may achieve more in our endeavors. Through the intercession of our patroness, Our Lady of Assumption, let us ask the Lord to give us the courage, skill, wisdom, humility, and strength as we continue to serve and work for all Maasinhons,” he added.

On August 10, Mercado also led the city in the celebration of its 18th Charter Day as they honored “all who have contributed and continue to contribute to the development of our city.”

“You are the reason why Maasin City has been soaring high, why we have achieved our goals and why we continue to make our beloved city a better place to live in,” the mayor said as he offered the growth of the city to its patroness.

The city’s 18th Charter Anniversary carried the theme “#MaasinAjonay #UswagPaMore,” which, according to Mercado, “signifies our strength as a people.”

“Despite all the hardships, despite all the trials, despite all the obstacles that have come our way, we were able to succeed and we were able to win because we are united and coordinated,” he said.

Mercado also urged the Maasin residents “to work together as one in molding and shaping our city.”

“Indeed, there is no doubt that with our joined efforts, our community will continue to shine and will be in the realms of greater heights. With the cooperation of all people in our community, the development which we are all dreaming of is not out of reach,” he said in a speech.

Meanwhile, Mercado reported that their job fairs on August 13 registered over 200 job seekers applying for local and international job openings. About 34 were hired on the spot.

A fourth-class city in Southern Leyte, Maasin was selected as one of the 359 awardees of Seal of Good Local Governance (SGLG) in 2017 out of the 145 cities and 1,715 local government units evaluated by the Department of Interior and Local Government.

In its 2018 SGLG assessment, Maasin City was included among the nine local government units in Eastern Visayas that qualified for national assessment. (SunStar Philippines)
