Run, Sara, Run

SEVENTY-FIVE percent of Dabawenyos believe Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio will run for senator in the 2019 midterm elections according to a survey conducted by the Institute of Popular Opinion (IPO) from the University Mindanao (UM).

“Given that her Hugpong ng Pagbabago regional party is becoming bigger, 11 in 15 Dabawenyos believe that Mayor Sara is set to run as senator during the midterm elections of 2019,” Dr. Ma. Linda Arquiza, UM assistant vice president for Research and Publication Center, said in a media forum at Habi at Kape on Wednesday, August 15.

Of the 11 who said they believe Duterte-Carpio will run for senator, 91 percent or 10 of 11 Dabawenyos consider the decision for the city mayor to run as senator is good for President Rodrigo Duterte. The remaining says otherwise.

The survey was conducted from July 13 to July 18 in the city with a total of 1,200 respondents.

Meanwhile, 25 percent of the respondents said Duterte-Carpio will not run for senator.

“Perhaps, the 25 percent rely on the expression of Mayor Inday that she is not really set to run as senator unless being irked by the opposition party,” Arquiza said.

She added, “Perhaps, sentiment springs from the feeling that Davao will be left behind, a question of ‘who is left home?’ when both President Duterte and Mayor Sara will hold national positions.”

The study also released a list of names of Dabawenyos’ top choice for city mayor if Duterte-Carpio runs for senatorial position.

Arquiza said Paolo Duterte tops the list followed by Congressman Karlo Nograles second, Vice Mayor Bernie Al-ag third while Danny Dayanghirang and Mabel Sunga-Acosta tied at fourth spot.
