Briones: Speculations

I DON’T like to tackle the recent spate of killings, whether allegedly state-sponsored or otherwise, that has plagued Cebu in the last month or so.

People have been giving their two cents worth on the possible perpetrators or why these have happened. If you listen to them talk you’d think they were experts.

But with all kinds of information at their fingertips, people can’t help but speculate. Not that I blame them.

Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña continues to come up with allegations that put the police organization in the region in a bad light.

Not that I blame the mayor.

As I have said before, I believe majority of the Cebuano public, Osmeña including, want the drug problem to go away.

Who doesn’t?

And it goes without saying that the same majority support the Duterte administration’s war against illegal drugs.

But the police’s handling of recent events that involved police officers is not helping their cause.

For all we know, they have been telling the truth. So if they have, why are they withholding information that would put the matter to rest?

Anyway, as I have said, I don’t want to talk about the subject because I am torn. Torn between my all-out support for the men and women who put their lives at risk to protect the public from the drug menace and a nagging feeling that Osmeña is on to something.

How I wish the two would see eye to eye so they can address the problem. Together. Because, in an ideal world, that’s how it’s supposed to be.

With that said, I will stop writing about the matter. Yup, you won’t hear a peep from me from now on.

You see, I don’t want violence to become blasé. I don’t want people to get used to the subject. And I certainly don’t want them talking about these incidents like they were talking about the weather.

Anyway, I have nothing intelligent to say about the matter because I don’t have all the information.

I like to deal in facts.

Like two Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency 7 agents are dead. Both killed in ambush. One in Cebu City and the other in Carcar City.

No one can argue with that.

In the latter’s case, one of the ambushers was hit, and he was yet to be identified.

Anything else I say will be me giving my own two cents worth and I’ll end up being a hypocrite because that’s what I want to stop.

Speculation will not solve the problem, it’ll just muddle it.

So yes, I will definitely shy away from the current “goings-on” until I get all the facts. My lips are sealed. Zip.
