4 foreigners hurt after baggage elevator collapsed

FOUR Chinese nationals, two of whom are senior citizens, were hurt after the baggage elevator of a private resort in Barangay Tan-awan, Oslob they were in collapsed yesterday morning.

Police identified the injured as Panwan Hua, 41; Panze Xi, 72; Pan Xue Bing, 61; and Dong Ling, 32.

The four are from Guangzhou, China.

Local officials assured that the four Chinese nationals have already been treated after the management of the Seafari Beach Resort committed to shoulder their medical expenses.

PO2 Albert Almario of the Oslob Police Station said the four victims came from Tan-awan where they watched the whale sharks and had decided to return to the hotel at 8:50 a.m. yesterday.

The Chinese nationals tried to convince in-house security guard Dionisio Heyuca to allow them to take the baggage elevator but the latter refused.

The Chinese nationals reportedly pleaded with him until Heyuca gave in.

Snapped

While the Chinese nationals were inside, the line that held the elevator suddenly snapped just a few feet before they reached the lobby door, causing the accident.

The elevator shaft is 10 feet deep, Almario said.

Hotel staff members immediately brought the four Chinese nationals to the Oslob District Hospital but they were later transferred to the Chong Hua Hospital in Cebu City.

Elizabeth Benologa, Oslob tourism officer, told reporters that the hotel management committed to assist the Chinese nationals with their medical needs. (JKV)
