AS FASHION continues to evolve meeting the demands and wants of the ever-changing fashion community, fashion designers and fashion enthusiasts alike now notice the beautiful fabric and beadworks done by the indigenous people (IP) just like in Davao Region.

Even earlier, the fashion industry had slowly been looking at and incorporating the works of the IP in their couture. However the attention now had somehow been amplified as there had been means and innovations done to make it look more modern while still keeping in mind the sacredness of the fabric.

Last August 4, Davao-based young fashion designer Wilson Limon had his fashion trunk show at Marco Polo Davao where he showcased his different modern-cut couture with inspiration and partnership from the Bagobo Tagabawa, Tboli, Blaan, and Tagakaolo.

The designs represented each tribal community showing their real identity through the creative direction of Limon. The fashion pieces are very much wearable during formal occasions and gathering. His designs range from formal barong and gowns to breezy tops and pants perfect for outings and as beach wears.

Aside from this, the fabrics of other IPs were also showcased at the Mindanao Trade Expo which opened August 11 and will be open until August 17 at Abreeza Ayala Malls.

Expo President Dr. Rosevic Del Rosario-Cembrano said there are 30 weavers from Davao Occidental.

“It has always been our aim to provide a venue to promote local products while developing several communities in Mindanao,” said Cembrano.

Present in the expo are colorful and unique-patterned fabrics of Mandaya dagmay, Bagobo Tagabawa inabal, Tausug pis syabit (which are available in both pure cotton and cotton and polyester bend). On the other hand, the Mandaya dagmay and the Bagobo Tagabawa are made of abaca.
