Federalism to pave way for more ecozones

ONCE the federal state of government pushes through, more economic zones are expected, a government official said.

“That is really the intention of it because the principle of federalism is small government that means you decide according to your resources,” Mindanao Development Authority (Minda) public relations officer Adrian Tamayo said in an interview on Wednesday August 15, at Habi at Kape, Abreeza Malls, Davao City.

Tamayo added if a region knows its resources on its specific proximity then these resources are key advantages in inviting investors in the region.

Tamayo also said the shift of governance will also bring inter-government competition as well.

“These small governments will create policies and laws that will attract people and in the end that will be revenue generation,” Tamayo said.

Tamayo said the current state of policy making does not see much from the region’s point-of-view which is very important, Tamayo said, since the proposed law will benefit most of the people from the region.

“Ang tao sa baba nagahatag lang ug proposal, tapos disisyonan dadto (sa national) kung mayo or dili (The person from the lower office only submits proposal, then the national committee gets to decide whether its beneficial or not),” Tamayo said.

Tamayo added the people from the top have only fewer ideas on the current condition from the regions.

“Daghan pud kayo bureaucracies (there’s a lot of bureaucracies). But if you go federal, you have your competent power down and immediately you just have to send it to your regional government. If they see the need for the urgency of the law then it gets to be implemented,” Tamayo said.

Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Focal Person on Federalism Benjamin Velarde said during the media conference the proposed federal government will also focus on creating more support for local businesses given that the regions can now address the economic development.
