Bacolod SK to gather for youth forum

THE Sangguniang Kabataan chairpersons from the 61 barangays in Bacolod City are expected to gather for the first time on Friday to attend a forum in relation to the celebration of the International Youth Week in St. John’s Institute (SJI).

Bacolod Representative Greg Gasataya and Bacolod SK Federation President Ayesha Villaflor will grace the forum which is spearheaded by the Grade 12 students of SJI as part of their class in Media and Information Literacy.

The aim of this activity is for SK chairpersons to gather and formulate projects and programs that can benefit young people of this city.

The International Youth Day is being celebrated on August 12 of every year since the United Nations General Assembly in 1999.

This year’s theme, “Safe Spaces for Youth,” aims to engage young people in activities related to their diverse interests, participate in the decision-making process and freely express themselves.

According to un.org, safe spaces refer to civic, public, digital, and well-planned physical spaces that can help accommodate the needs of diverse youth, especially those vulnerable to marginalization or violence.

SJI is the only institution in Bacolod City that celebrates the 18-year-old UN-initiated event.

The school’s weeklong celebration was launched on August 10 through a photo and video exhibits.

Selected Grade 12 students also guested in live radio shows of Bombo Radyo and RMN Bacolod over the weekend to spread awareness on the celebration.

A forum participated by senior high school students and the Rotary Exchange scholars from France, Switzerland, Germany and Spain was also held yesterday at SJI for cross-cultural exchange. (Leah Angela Cioco/SunStar Bacolod)
