Favorite toners

A FRIEND recently asked me what I can recommend for toner, and I could not give her a straight answer. I used to hate applying toner because most in the market were full of alcohol and would sting my skin. But now, toners are a lot more skin-friendly. Yes, you need it to bring balance back to your skin after cleansing and help it absorb your moisturizer better. That’s why the most basic routine is really to cleanse, tone and moisturize.

I couldn’t give my friend a straight answer because I use different toners depending on how my skin feels. Some days are drier or greasier, clearer or duller than others. Here are some that I’ve used that I like:

Nuxe Paris Gentle Toning Lotion

If my skin feels more on the normal to dry side, I’ll reach for this lightly rose-scented toner. It makes my skin feel more moisturized and plumper after use. This also helps makeup go on more smoothly. It’s alcohol-free, which makes it safe for sensitive skin. This is my toner of choice when I travel, when my skin tends to get more stressed out with dry cabin air, a change in climate, and lack of sleep.

Dickinson’s Witch Hazel Toner

I have been using this on and off for years and several of my friends who are mommies also rely on this for when their children have irritated skin or bug bites. Witch hazel relieves inflammation and is good as a toner since it helps decrease oil. It’s recommended for normal, combination, or acne prone skin. Word of warning, though: Those with sensitive noses may need time to get used to the strong smell of witch hazel. It also has some alcohol in it, which works to remove the last of any dirt or makeup after cleansing, but sensitive skin may feel a bit of a sting.

Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Oil-Free Toner

Combination to oily skin may like this toner, which is specifically formulated to reduce oil while not stripping it of moisture. It is PH-balanced and free of alcohol, parabens, fragrance and colorants, if you want a simple and straightforward toner to condition the skin.
