Provincial PWD scholars increased

THE persons with disabilities (PWD) scholars which was sponsored by the Iloilo Provincial Government continue to increase.

At present, a total of 28 scholars are availing the scholarship program, 21 are new and the seven are from the previous batch.

“The number of enrollees are increasing,” according to Neneth Pador, Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) head.

She said on Thursday, August 16 at the Iloilo Provincial Capitol, some of the first batch students have already graduated last year.

Pador said that students under the program can enroll in government-support schools. The program started two years ago.

The students are selected through screening with the help of their committee and University of the Philippines’ Psychologists.

Each scholar received an assistance or allowance for P3,500; P2,500 for research allowance (for graduating); P2,000 for books (per semester) and P2,000 for the uniform (school year) with a total amount of P41,000.

Requirements to avail the program are PWD card, certification from MSWDO that he/she is an active registered PWD in their municipality and Social Case Study, certificate of residency and good moral from punong barangay and report card (general weight average not less than 80).

The students are needed to maintain a passing grade.

A 23-year-old first year college student Allan Peñonal is thankful that he was able to avail the program. He is currently taking BA in Electronics Technology at Iloilo Science and Technology University. (Carolyn Jane Abello)
