TWO women-led organizations in Cebu collaborated for a public health diabetes awareness campaign.
Zonta Club of Cebu 1 and Sweet Alert Society Inc. will initiate this campaign for women with diabetes or at risk for diabetes.
A memorandum of agreement was signed yesterday by Minerva Yuvienco, Gina Atienza, Jennifer Rosello, Erlinda Binghay of Zonta Club of Cebu 1, and Dr. Marian Dinopol and Armi Garcia, Russian Federation honorary consul and head of Sweet Alert Society of Sweet Alert Society Inc. that sealed their partnership for the advocacy.
As part of the groups’ campaign, a World Diabetes Day conference dubbed as “Health Alert! A Must for Women” will be held on Nov. 14, 2018 at the Cebu Chinese Chamber of Commerce.
At least 250 women-participants are expected to attend in this conference.
No registration fee is required.
During this activity, speakers will discuss the overview on people who are at risk of developing diabetes, the roles of balance diet and lifestyle for the prevention and treatment of diabetes, as well as the access to education programs and support services.
“This will be an ongoing education awareness gyud, especially for women kay there are some women who didn’t even know they are at risk,” said Binghay. “The only way to curb diabetes, especially sa women, is to reach out to them now and teach them about diet and lifestyle.”
According to the International Diabetes Federation, diabetes is the ninth leading cause of death in the women globally, causing 2.1 million deaths each year.
Zonta is an international non-profit organization committed to the goal of promoting health and well-being of women.
Sweet Alert Society, on the other hand, has been working together with the Department of Health and Australian-based Insulin for Life to help curb juvenile diabetes by conducting an annual three-day juvenile diabetes summer camp. (MARY RUTH MALINAO, USJ-R INTERN)
