Gov’t official: Federalism to boost local businesses

LOCAL entrepreneurship will be boosted once the government shifts to federalism, a government official said.

“In federalism, we promote entrepreneurship. Through this, we can come up with more empowered regions through local business,” Benjamin Velarde, Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) focal person on Federalism, said during a media forum on Wednesday, August 15, 2018 at Habi at Kape, Abreeza Mall, Davao City.

Velarde added that with the proposed government system’s focus on entrepreneurship, more entrepreneurial trainings and seminars await Dabawenyo business owners.

“Because that is really the vision of the federal government, to embolden the regions through assessing the specific resources abundant in that specific region,” Velarde said.

Adrian Tamayo, Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) public relations officer, said in an interview the vision of the federal state of government is to be able for the regions to assess their own needs and concerns, and to address these immediately without passing through numerous levels of bureaucracies as what the current mode of government is doing.

“We want people to know federalism in a good way. We are tapping the digital social media platform,” Velarde said.

He added come October there will be a discussion regarding the issue on federalism during the State of the Barangay Address.

“Also on August 30 to 31, there will be a training for federalism. And after that we will roll out to the regions in order to invite more partners from the media to raise more awareness,” he added.

He said the academe is also on the list of future events in creating more avenues for discussion regarding federalism.
