TWELVE persons detained in the Cebu City Jail got married inside the gym of the Operation Second Chance in Barangay Kalunasan yesterday.
Mary Rose Rodriguez, 20, got married to Jiffy Espinosa, who is serving jail time since March last year because of illegal drug charges.
Rodriguez and Espinosa became partners four years ago after they met in the house of Rodriguez’s mother.
Rodriguez said their relationship is hard, considering that she is living in Barangay Pasil and they already have a one-year-old child.
Rodriguez said she visits her husband every Tuesday and Saturday.
“Kasagaran sa amoang kalisod financial kay naa na man sad mi anak,” she said.
Even if Espinosa is behind bars, Rodriguez said she was happy and surprised when he asked her to marry him.
She added that her parents are not against their relationship.
Alvin Limoran, 38, said he is also grateful that he married Mirasol, a detainee.
He said they have been together for 16 years.
Limoran said Mirasol was jailed eight months ago but it was a case of mistaken identity.
“Lisod kaayo para nako pero kayanon kay wa man tay mahimo,” Mirasol said.
The wedding was organized by the Cebu City Government through the office of Councilor Dave Tumulak.
Jail warden Renante Rubio said he is happy for the newlyweds, adding that their love is “really stronger than the fences and walls” of the jail. Clarenz Jay Mendoza, USJ-R Intern
