Cebu, Bacolod among most competitive cities

CEBU City remained in the ninth spot in the Cities and Municipalities Competitiveness Index 2018 released by the National Competitive Council (NCC) Philippines.

Mandaue City landed on the 13th spot.

The index ranks how competitive cities and municipalities are in terms of economic dynamism, government efficiency, infrastructure, and resiliency.

Although Cebu City remained in its spot in the overall ranks, it has improved its ranking in economic dynamism, where it placed sixth, from 10th place last year.

Economic dynamism, according to the NCC Philippines website, is associated with activities that create a stable expansion of business and industries and higher employment.

In terms of government efficiency, Cebu City did not place this year. Last year, it was 95th.

Mandaue City was in the 20th spot in terms of government efficiency this year.

Government efficiency refers to the quality and reliability of government services and “government support for effective and sustainable productive expansion.”

This key indicator looks at issues like corruption, protection and enforcement of contracts, taxation, and regulation.

In infrastructure, Cebu City landed in eighth place while Lapu-Lapu City placed 20th.

The NCC said it looks into “the physical building blocks that connect, expand and sustain a locality and its surroundings that enable seamless flow of goods and services.”

As for resilience, Cebu City placed fifth and was among the “most improved highly urbanized cities” while Mandaue City placed second.

Quezon City kept the top spot as most competitive highly-urbanized city, a distinction it has held for three consecutive years already.

Manila remained in the second spot, while Pasay City obtained third place.

Other highly-urbanized cities in the country that landed in the top 10 include Cagayan de Oro in fifth place, Makati in sixth, Pasig in seventh, Bacolod in eighth, Cebu in ninth, and Muntinlupa in tenth.

Bacolod placed eighth this year, from last year’s 20th ranking.

Cebu and Bacolod are the only cities in the Visayas that made it to the NCC’s top 10 most competitive highly urbanized cities in the country. RVC
