Sad face of social media

SOCIAL media seems to have shrunk the world into a smaller piece of stone hovering in the solar system. Staying connected and communicating with family and friends, especially those who live in other parts of the country and the world, are at its most convenient (unless you have a sloppy internet connection). But amidst all these high-tech ease in connectivity, social media has not been immune to user abuse.

This reveals a lot of ugly facets in the technology that has caused disappointments and even harm to people. In this issue, readers talk about the sad face of social media, which they hope to see an end to.

Posting articles or issues that aren’t reliable and true is one thing I don’t like. It’s irresponsible for people to post something on social media without verifying whether or not it is true. Fake news is rampant these days, which causes misunderstanding in and out of social media. ISA MARIE PEDRANO, 19, ARCHITECTURE STUDENT (CIT-U)

It’s insulting someone publicly through social media. It affects them emotionally. As a result, some tend to get depressed and even commit suicide. JUSTINE GIAN CARLO PESONS, 19, MARINE TRANSPORTATION STUDENT (UC-LM)

Social media is a public space where everything is exposed. One click could be disastrous when done irresponsibly. A lot of people in social media have been bullied in one way or another. This has caused negative effects on the victims. Let us all be sensitive and think what a difference a simple post can make in one’s life. JAMES MARIE KYLA COLINA, 18, INTERIOR DESIGN STUDENT (USC)

I think one of the worst things people can do on social media is online shaming or bullying. Instead of providing positive feedback, constructive criticism, or simply just not commenting at all when we have nothing good to say, online shaming or bullying can bring down another person and it ends up propagating a culture of hate and resentment. We really need to be mindful of what effect our words and comments have, and just try to have more respect for one another. MICHAEL BRIAN TINA, 26, SUPPORT ENGINEER
