Babanto, tkd team win bronze in asiad

THE country’s jins put the Philippines on the medal tally of the 2018 Asian Games after winning bronze medals in the men’s and women’s team poomsae event in Indonesia yesterday.

Cebuano Rinna Babanto and teammates Juvenile Faye Crisostomo of Nueva Ecija and Janna Dominique Oliva of Olongapo won a bronze medal after falling short to South Korea in the women’s poomsae semifinals.

The female jins scored 7.11 points against South Korea’s 8.02 points. Thailand defeated South Korea in the championship round to bag the gold medal.

The Filipino jins made it to the semis after escaping Indonesia in the quarterfinals. The Philippines scored 8.070 against 8.040 of Indonesia. The women’s PH team beat Hongkong in the Round of 16 with scores of 8.000 and 7.490.

The men’s team had the same result as they captured bronze medal after losing to the powerhouse China in the semifinals. The Filipinos scored 7.830 while the Chinese managed to score 8.180.

The men’s team is composed of Dustin Jacob Mella of Mandaluyong, Jeordan Dominguez of Mountain Province and Manila’s Rodolfo Reyes Jr.

South Korea rebounded in the men’s division as they won gold medal after beating China in the championship round. South Korea scored 8.480 while China had 8.020.

Meanwhile, 29th Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Mary Joy Tabal will be competing in the women’s marathon on Aug. 26.

Cebuano golfers Weiwei Gao, Lloyd Jefferson Go and Lois Kaye Go are set to play on Aug. 23 to 26; Cebu’s elite mountainbiker Niño Surban will suit up for the country in the men’s cross-country race on Aug. 20 to 21; and the potential medalist from Cebu Margielyn Didal will compete on the women’s skateboarding on Aug. 28 to 29.

As of 7 p.m yesterday, the Philippines was at eighth place in the overall medal tally with two bronze medals. South Korea was on top with two golds, two silvers and one bronze followed by China with a 2-2-0 medal harverst and Chinese Taipei with a 1-0-3 medal haul. (RSC)
