Food terminal eyed to open in October

THE Davao Food Terminal Complex (DFTC) is slated to operate on October 3, 2018, an official from the Vegetable Industry Council of Southern Mindanao (VicsMin) said.

With the efforts and collaborations between the city government of Davao and the Department of Agriculture, the food terminal complex will be built with a P70 million budget.

“In this way we are expecting that through this project we can help and even assist our local agricultural entrepreneurs in advancing their business,” Maritess Alaba of VicsMin said during a media forum on Wednesday, August 15, at Habi at Kape in Abreeza Mall.

Alaba added through this project with the assistance from DA and the local government unit (LGU), the small-scale vegetable farmers will be given more opportunities to gain profit by having an avenue to sell their produce. Even fruit growers from other provinces in the region can now have more options as to where they can sell their harvest.

“The supply of the vegetable will be directly from the farmers who will also sell in the complex,” Alaba said.

Alaba also added Dabawenyo fruit and vegetable farmers can use the Davao Food Terminal in Toril, Davao City as a hub for wholesale selling of agricultural produce for the farmers’ bulk of harvest.

Earlier June, City Agriculture’s Office (CAO) head Leo Brian Leuterio said the fruit and vegetable farmers who will bring their harvests to the food terminal are ideally members of Federation of Farmers Cooperative in Davao City (FFCDC).

Leuterio said there are currently 50 individuals and farmer associations under FFDC. He also added through the presence of these agricultural cooperatives, farmers are also aided in selling their produce at a better price.
