Fisherman rescued by police, MDRRMC

AUTHORITIES saved a fisherman on board a pump boat buffeted by strong winds from Camiguin island towards Gingoog Bay in Misamis Oriental, Friday, August 17.

Members of the 1004th Maritime Police Station, Regional Maritime Unit (RMU)-Northern Mindanao together with rescuers from the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Council (MDRRMC) of Magsaysay, Misamis Oriental launched a rescue operation after receiving report of the missing fisherman.

A 33-year-old Alfie Maamo, resident of Hubangon, Mahinog, Camiguin went fishing last Thursday evening when his pump boat suddenly failed to start. He was then slowly drifted by the waves and spent the night floating at the Gingoog Bay.

"According to him he was at risk because of the strong gale along Binapor, Magsaysay town waiting for rescue," the RMU reported.

Authorities rescued the said fisherman who was then given medical attention.

"Per assessment of the MDRRMC officer, the fisherman is in good physical condition and temporarily stayed at a relative in San Isidro, Magsaysay town," the RMU said.

Meanwhile, Maamo's pump boat was under the custody of the San Isidro village chief while it is being repaired.

Authorities have been reminding fisher folk not to set sail without checking their sea vessels or when strong winds are battering.
