Oro's Canino tops 10-under level in Malaysia Chess Festival

PERENNIAL Asean Age-Group chess winner Ruelle "Tawing" Canino made Cagayan de Oro proud again with her latest conquest abroad.

The elementary pupil of Kauswagan Elementary School racked up 8 points in nine rounds Swiss system tourney to emerge champion in Under-10 category of the 15th Malaysian Chess Festival.

Canino was half a point ahead of male campaigner Gio Troy Ventura (7.5 pts) to bring home the top honor in the children's rivalry dubbed as "9th DATCC Age-Group Chess Championships.

"Long way to go for one of the country's youngest female chess masters," said former Misamis Oriental chess club president Fr. Vic Arellano after learning the good news.

Tawing's older brother Ronald Canino also performed creditably, scoring 6.5 points in Open section of the Malaysia Chess Festival 2018.
