Cagayan de Oro hopes to lure more investments

CITY Government officials are hoping that being recognized as the fifth most competitive city in the country would translate to more investments for Cagayan de Oro.

In a press conference, Mayor Oscar Moreno said they are devoting time to get the award because of what it would bring to Cagayan de Oro in the future.

"It's not the award, but it's what the bring award brings, the award brings a lot of interest to our city, more and more investors will be coming in," he said.

"Especially in the resiliency category, given what happened in Typhoon Sendong, given Mindanao today is not typhoon free anymore, resiliency is important, this is redemption for Cagayan de Oro. More will be interested," he added.

Moreno also said he dedicates Cagayan de Oro's big win at the 6th Regional Competitive Summit to the Kagay-anons who perished in the Typhoon Sendong, the worst tragedy to date that hit the City of Golden Friendship in 2011.

Moreno said the Most Resilient Highly Urbanized City recognition is an award not only for the City Government but to all the people who suffered immeasurable pain and loss because of Typhoon Sendong.

"No more Sendong," Moreno said.

He said he shares the honor with the City Council and to the people of the City Government who work tirelessly to deliver public service efficiently.

Cagayan de Oro was named the "Top 5 Most Competitive City" in the highly urbanized cities category and ranked first in the resiliency category.

According to the National Competitiveness Council, resiliency is the capacity of a locality to facilitate business and industries to create jobs, raise productivity, and increase the income of citizens over time despite of the shocks and stresses it encounters.

City Investments and Promotions officer Eileen San Juan said with the awards, they are expecting other local government units to benchmark the best practices of Cagayan de Oro, especially in the ease of doing business.
