Sarigumba keeps Amateur Open title

DEFENDING champion Ronnie Sarigumba displayed nerves of steel as he rallied in the final day to keep the Mactan-Cebu Amateur Open Men’s Regular Division title at the Mactan Island Coral Golf Club in Lapu-Lapu City yesterday.

Sarigumba beat early leader and retired Air Force sergeant Renato Aquino via sudden death playoff in Hole No.1 to keep the title.

After trailing Aquino by four in Day 1, Sarigumba narrowed the gap with a 74 in the second day, while Aquino had a 79 to finish tied at 153 in the two-day event.

In the playoffs, Sarigumba had a par in Hole No.1, while Aquino struggled with a bogey to surrender the title.

Others who made the top 10 in the men’s division were Vijay Vasandani (156), Hubert Calan (157), Bart Vergara (161), Charlie Sarigumba (161), Alfredo Cabajar (162),

Hiro Hasegawa (163), Andrew Cañete (164) and Zaldy Pioquinto (164).

The seniors division title on the other hand went to Vidal Hebi, who finished with a 157.

After firing a 76 in Day 1, Hebi fired the second-best score of Day 2 with an 81.

Hebi who lost the Senior’s Division title to Maj. Razie Razon via sudden death playoffs, finished almost 11 strokes clear of second placer Yoshio Yamane who had 168.
