THE Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) of Negros Occidental is optimistic that the newly-established multiplier farm for free-range chicken in Bago City will boost the locality’s production of the said commodity.

PVO personnel headed by Provincial Veterinarian Renante Decena turned over Thursday, August 23, the multiplier farm project worth about P400,000 to Bago City Veterinary Office.

The fund from the Provincial Government covers the construction of the building, initial stocks of 150 heads of free-range chicken, brooder for chicks, and an incubator.

The recipient-local government unit (LGU), for its part, provided the land area and will take charge the operation and management of the multiplier farm.

Under the partnership, the LGU shall also undertake a continuing dispersal of free-range chicken to its constituents as its “contribution” to sustain the province’s poultry production effort.

Aimed at promoting free-range chicken production in the province, the establishment of multiplier farms is under the Animal Genetic Improvement Program and Negros First Animal Livelihood Program of PVO.

The multiplier farm in Bago City has a breeder population of 150 heads, two and a half months old, and weighing an average of 1.5 kilograms of free-range chicken.

The initial stocks are expected to produce eggs in a month.

“The project is expected to boost chicken production in the city and nearby areas mainly by serving as the source of good quality chicks,” PVO said, adding that “it can be replicated by commercial raisers in the province.”

For this year, the Provincial Government has already established eight multiplier farms for free-range chicken and another five for duck production in 13 LGU-partners.

Another eight poultry multiplier farms will be established next year.
