Chacapna: This column and what management and supervision mean

CONINUATION.... So, what happened was that the lady mentor, at the top of her voice, ordered the student to carry back the empty gas tank and proceeded to the faculty. She took the empty gas tank and lob it to the floor while scolding the laughing faculty members.

The head teacher sensing the brewing fight led the two-faculty members to the principal’s office in order to settle the issue. The principal who happened to be a lady and upon looking at the male mentor started chiding him without inquiring as to what the root cause of the squabble. Hence, the brew worsened.

Speaking of management and supervision, DepEd is one of the most superfluous bureaucratic departments of the government. Meaning one cannot do away with red tape. A teacher’s squabble before it gets to the superintendent has to pass first to the head teacher, assistant principal, principal, supervisor, chief division officer and assistant superintendent. Similar to squabbles are the project of teachers like innovation and research project for promotion purposes or simply if a teacher wants to introduce developments, it needed to pass from one office to another.

This column at one point will also write something about management and supervision from the point of the administrator and the one being supervised or administered. Control and supervision is one test to determine the culpability of public officers. What makes a good or bad school supervisor or manager will be embraced.

Human nature prescribes one to be biased as seen in our story when the principal castigated the male mentor without investigating first. Not only principals, but even teachers in the classroom. Naturally a teacher is inclined to favor a good-looking student both in physical and behavioral over that of a hostile unattractive student. Even in workplaces, one who is good looking and even good in socializing will be favored over that of an aloof or unfriendly employee.

In good supervision and management, one has to exercise fairness or equality. Meaning due process must be observed regardless of any background. In our story what causes the principal to castigate the male teacher arises from previous encounters.

At one time, the principal has not announced to the faculty a classroom observation. So, she went straight to the class of the male mentor. What the principal found out....to be continued in the next issue.
