Backyard gardening to fight malnutrition

PILOT sites for “Gulayan sa Paaralan” and “Gulayan sa Barangay” this year will address the risk of malnutrition cases in Davao City.

For Vegetable Industry Council of Southern Mindanao (Vicsmin) president Genovivo Cajes, the issue on malnutrition among growing kids must be resolved. These initiatives by the government of creating vegetable gardens in public schools and barangays might be a good option to raise health awareness as well.

“Ang Daniel R. Aguinaldo nga high school kay usa sa mga pilot sites nato noh para sa gulayan sa eskwelahan. Aduna puy mga pilot sites para sa atung mga barangay (The Daniel R. Aguinaldo High School is one of the pilot sites for the ‘gulayan sa eskwelahan’. We also have pilot sites for our barangays),” Cajes said on Friday, August 24, 2018 during the 17th National Vegetable Congress at Davao Convention Center.

Cajes also added Vicsmin is also ready to assist the schools and barangay for assistance in terms of providing the technologies for the vegetable gardens.

For Davao City councilor Marissa Abella, the government is very much willing to show their support for schools and barangay to participate in this event since this will help in having a healthier community.

“Sa aming bayan sa Las Piñas meron kaming binibigyan ng award para sa ‘Best Gulayan sa Paaralan’ sa mga public schools at maging sa barangay (In our city in Las Piñas, we award ‘Best Gulayan sa Paaralan in our public schools and even in our barangays),” senator Cynthia Villar said during the vegetable congress.

Villar also said the importance of having these vegetable gardens as an innovative food source for the school, especially in providing the sufficient health needs for the children.

In this way, Villar said, the health concern on malnutrition can be decreased. (GAD)
