Wounded NPA rebel surrenders to military authorities

A MEMBER of the New People’s Army (NPA), wounded and abandoned by his comrades, has surrendered to government authorities in Misamis Occidental province, military officials said Saturday, August 25, 2018.

Lieutenant Colonel Ryan Severo, Army’s 10th Infantry Battalion commander, identified the NPA surrenderer as Jemar Labito Salayon alias Edward, 17.

Severo said Salayon surrendered around 9 a.m. Friday in Bonifacio, Misamis Occidental.

He said Salayon was among the NPA rebels that figured in a firefight with his troops on August 11 in Hoyohoy village, Tangub City.

He said Salayon informed them that “he sustained gunshot wound on his left knee during the clash and was abandoned by his comrades while fleeing.”

The army commander said the NPA surrenderer is presently recuperating at a hospital in Ozamiz City.

He said that Salayon will receive P15,000 immediate cash assistance and P50,000 livelihood aide.

Aside from the monetary assistance, Severo said he could also avail services from other government agencies such as phycho-social debriefing from the Department of Social Welfare and Development; skills training by Technical Education and Skills Development Authority; employment and capacity building from the different institutions of the government and security as guaranteed by the Armed Forces of the Philippines and Philippine National Police.
