THE South Korean market is a new potential export destination for the durian, said the South Korean ambassador to the Philippines.

“With this, we are actually considering an option of having durian as part of the agricultural produce to be exported in the Korean market,” South Korean ambassador Han Dong-man said during a forum on Thursday, August 23.

He added that his visit here allowed him to see that Davao has a rich supply of fruits and vegetables.

The Durian Industry Council of Davao City said the city has 2,800 hectares of durian allowing it to supply a large amount of durian in the market.

Han said the exportation of durian to South Korea would still be negotiated with the investors and partners.

“But one thing’s for sure, definitely Koreans will like this fruit,” Han said.

Based on recent data from the Korean embassy, banana is one of the major exports of the Philippines to Korea.

With the rich supply of durian in the country, Han said this could be a potential export commodity of the country aside from banana.

“This is why I invite and encourage Korean companies to import more from the Philippines especially here Davao,” Han said.
