IN THE height of the green movement, people, advocacies, and shops all around the world are slowly transitioning into a greener lifestyle and a more plastic-free environment.

Here in Davao City, the Croft Bulk Store is leading the zero-waste lifestyle. Such a store, is one of the first of its kind in the city.

Recently opened on August 19, the Croft Bulk Store has been talked about by not only environmental advocates and vegans but Dabawenyos who would want to start a zero-waste or vegan lifestyle.

Similar to the New York-based zero-waste bulk store, the Package Free Shop, the Croft Bulk Store encourages customers to bring their containers, jars, and reusable bags to purchase everyday needs and other products from their store.

They also sell vegan and plant-based products and reusable items such as metal straws, produce bags, tote bags, and masons jars.

The Croft Bulk Store’s owner, Sahara Lara Casteel also promotes a waste-free lifestyle. Sahara is also a Greenpeace advocate and a vegan. She is also the co-founder of The Vegan Dinosaur, a restaurant that also incorporates waste-free atmosphere.

In purchasing, you get first-hand interaction with the items and the staff. First, you come in with your containers and have it weighed on the scale. Then you are free to fill up your jars with healthy and plant-based products. Afterwards, you weigh and pay on the counter. Now you’re on your way to a greener and healthier lifestyle.

There may also be chance that you meet fellow vegans and environmental advocates who you could share stories and swap vegan recipes with.

Prices in the shop range from P50 to P150 per gram in vegan food items. The shop is open every day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. (with reports from Marnil del Monte, AdDU Intern)
