City to use eSports, cosplay in fight vs. illegal drugs

AN anti-drug program integrated with electronic sports and cosplay education awaits the youth of Cebu City.

Mayor Tomas Osmeña has approved the proposal of Cebu eSports United to conduct a series of activities from August to December.

“Cebu eSports United, I am happy to announce your program with the Cebu City Government is hereby approved,” Osmeña said in a Facebook post dated Aug. 25.

The project aims to prevent drug use among the Cebuano youth through hobbyist activities; educate the youth to discipline themselves and manage their time wisely; and support the talents of the Cebuano youth hobbyist community.

Under the proposal, the City Government’s biggest contribution will be to provide a P300,000 budget for the cash prize of the Mayor’s Cup Cebu Gaming Tournament, which will be held on Dec. It will be charged to City-sponsored activities.

Last Aug. 22, Mayor Osmeña allowed the eighth edition of The International 2018 to be live-streamed for free at the Cebu City Sports Center. The International is the “World Cup” of e-sports Dota 2.

Even before that, the local chief executive has been vocal about supporting the e-sports and cosplay community.

“I am fully supportive of Cebu eSports United’s plan to gather all our Cebuano gamers at the grassroots level and use their passions as a means to prevent drug-use, educate youth to discipline themselves and manage their time wisely, and support the talents of both the gamers and the artists of the Cebuano gaming and cosplay community. Let it be known that from now on, they are recognized as the official partners of the Cebu City Government,” Osmeña said in a Facebook post last June. (RTF)
