The power of makeup

IN today's society, you can only see a handful of women going out of their homes without makeup. A large population of women come out of their houses wearing makeup, even if it’s just lip tint, foundation and, of course, the eyebrow. Kilay is life, after all.

Applying makeup has become a part of a woman's daily routine. As such, it’s not unusual to find makeup artists nowadays, especially here in Cagayan de Oro.

What is rare to find are the makeup brands these artists use as some of them work using makeup brands that are hard to find in the city.

Luckily, there's a makeup and beauty lounge in Cagayan Town Center where you can find international makeup brands, brands that you cannot find anywhere even in malls.

Bellemoda Makeup and Beauty Lounge by Liane Bastareche, located in the second floor of Cagayan Town Center, was established in December 2017.

Owned by 22-year-old makeup artist Eliza Liane Bastareche, Bellemoda is a shop that sells more than 200 brands of makeup and brushes which are 100 percent original.

Makeup brands in the shop includes: MAC, Naked, Anastasia Beverly Hills, Kylie, Huda Beauty, Tarte, Charlotte Tillbury, Urban Decay, Colourpop, Clinique, Estee Lauder, Chanel, Givenchy, RMK cosmetics, Ben Nye, Gladking, Tommy Hilfiger, BVLGARI, Temptu, among others.

"Bellemoda is a unique one stop shop. I think Bellemoda lang ang naa sa CDO (I think only Bellemoda is in CDO). I mean as far as I know, ako lang ang naa diri sa CDO nga maka access mo in everything that you see in the internet, naa diri. It’s really complete with items and walay shipping fee so walay additional nga cost, expenses kay mao ma'y usahay reklamo sa uban (I mean as far as I know, I am the only one in CDO wherein you can access everything tha you see in the internet, it is here. It’s really complete withitems and no shipping fee so no additional cost because that’s the complaint of some)," Bastareche said.

Bastareche assured that all the products in Bellemoda are original as she obtains her makeup from suppliers from Manila who personally visits the companies in United States, United Kingdom and Japan to acquire the products.

"Ako as makeup artist, gusto ko nga makit-an ang product before nako paliton. Gusto ko nga i-check sya una kung dili ba sya fake, dili ba sya damage kay what if pag shipping, na-damage sya, another cost na pud kay ipabalik na pud nimo sa iya. So isa sa mga advantages sa Bellemoda is walay shipping and it’s 100 percent original here," she said.

(As a makeup artist, I want to see the product first before buying it. I want to check first if it’s not fake and no damage because what if during shipping, it’s damaged, it will be another cost because you will return it. That’s one of the advantages of Bellemoda because there’s no shipping and it’s 100 percent original here.) )

Bellemoda, which came from the French words "belle" which means "beauty" and "moda" which is "fashion," came into existence due to Eliza's love and passion for makeup, her determination to start her own business and seeing her fellow makeup artists' struggle to find the brand they wanted to use.

"Nag start ni atong college ko, since I love doing makeup man since college. College pa ko dili ko ga-ask og payment sa akong makeup. Murag sa ako lang mga friends, if naa sila'y mga events, ana. So sila ang akong murag training ground," Eliza said.

(It started when I was college since I love doing makeup since then. I did not ask for a fee when I did makeup when I was in college. Just to my friends, If they have events. So they were my training ground.)

After getting her bachelor's degree in Business Administration major in Marketing from Xavier University in 2016, Eliza worked for eight months as a bank teller.

But for someone who grew up in a family of business-minded people, working did not satisfy her.

"Nag work ko as bank teller and then na-realize nako nga dili gyud ko for working. I want to pursue my passion and my dream so nag eskwela ko sa Make-up Designory, it’s a makeup school based in New York, basically it’s an international school nga naay branch sa Manila. So didto ko nag training sa ako ang makeup," she said.

"Na feel gyud nako nga dili para sa ako ang working tungod kay gakita nako ang akong family nga like mas tsada gyud mag negosyo kaysa mag work, for me (For me, it is better to have a business than work.)," she added.

After 2 months of training, Eliza went to Cagayan de Oro City and met several makeup artists in the city.

"So nakita nako sa mga makeup artists diri nga, sa akoa pud, galisod mi og pangita og kanang mga branded nga makeup nga safe and 100 percent original gyud (As a makeup artist, it is really hard to find branded makeup that are safe and 100 percent original.)," Eliza said.

Purchasing branded makeup online is an option for them but the knowledge that the products they bought online may be fake or damaged made them hesitate.

"As makeup artists, kami dili gyud mi pwede nga mag use of fake makeup kay what if madaot ang face sa client, so negative na sya sa amoa (As makeup artists, we do not use fake makeup because it’s bad for our client’s face)," Eliza said.

As young as 21 years old, Eliza decided to open her own business and on December 9, 2017, Bellemoda Makeup and Beauty Lounge by Liane Bastareche came into being.

Price for products sold in Bellemoda ranges from P500 to P50,000, which is the Urban Decay brush vault.

Apart from branded makeup, Bellemoda also offers hair and makeup services. For P1,000, Eliza will do the client's hair and makeup in her studio inside the shop. However, if the client prefers to have it at home, in hotel, in events or somewhere outside the shop, hair and makeup services will be worth P1,500.

According to Eliza, most of her clients are teenagers, particularly the senior high school students.

"Kasagaran gaanhi diri kay as young as 14. Murag grabe mag buy ang mga teenagers, mga senior high grabe sila mag buy. So siguro as young as 14 to 12, ing ana akoang range market," she said, assuring that they have products which are safe for younger girls.

(Majority who visit here are teens as young as 14. Mostly teenagers and senior high buy makeup. My range market is as young as 12 to 14.)

Eliza also mentioned her plan to expand her business in Iligan City or Butuan City.

Bellemoda is one of the presenters in this coming 7th Mindanao Fashion Summit on August 27. They will also be having a 4-day sale starting on August 28 to 31, with its items 5 to 10 percent off.

"I invite everyone, tanan mga makeup lovers, tanan mga makeup enthusiasts, and makeup artists to please visit Bellemoda here in Cagayan Town Center, second floor (I invite all makeup enthusiasts and makeup artists to please visit Bellemoda here in Cagayan Town Center, second floor.)" Eliza said.

She also shared some tips for makeup enthusiasts, especially those who plan to enter in the makeup industry.

"Make sure nga imoa syang passion, make sure that you love it. Don't do anything that you don't love. Dili ka ma satisfy sa imong life if you don't live the thing that you're doing," Eliza said.

(Make sure that is your passion, make sure that you love it. Do not do anything that you don’t love. You will never be satisfied in your life if you don’t live the thing that you’re doing.)

She said there are some days when she works for 10 hours without eating anything or even taking a break but she doesn't feel any exhaustion as she loves what she is doing.

"Ang akong advice is before ka mosulod sa aning industry, make sure that you really love it. Make sure nga imong commitment is 100 percent, make sure nga imohang effort gihatag gyud tanan nimo, best gyud nimo always imong ihatag para makit-an nimo unsa ka tsada ni nga industry, unsa ka happy ka, murag adventurous kaayo, challenging, para ma enjoy ka sa imong life," Eliza said.

(My advice is before you enter in this industry, make sure that you really love it. Make sure that your commitment is 100 percent. Make sure you give your effort and your best. So you will be happy and youll enjoy your life.)

Young and determined, Eliza doesn't let anything stand in the way of her business. With passion and love for makeup, she was able to achieve her dreams.
