Pacete: San Roque – Manang Pula Festival

TWO big festivals were celebrated in the town of Manapla on August 19. San Roque is the patron saint of the parish. Devotees believe that he is the “Man of God” who could heal and protect the Manaplahanons through faith in God. That could be the reason why the Manaplahanons are always blessed.

Manang Pula (Crispula Santillan in reality) with husband Bernardo Gallo was a brilliant “capitana” during her time. The couple has shown to the people in the community the real spirit of sharing and honest governance. The public services delivered by the municipal officials are always reflective of the generosity of the hearts and commitment to the quality life of Crispula and Bernardo.

Mayor Lourdes Socorro Escalante of Manapla said that the highlight of the final day (August 19) of the 148th Manapla Town Fiesta is really the street dancing competition that mirrors the cultural history of the town and the vision of the leadership to make Manapla an ideal community where there is peace, unity and prosperity. To date, Manapla is no longer a sleeping fishing community. It is a fast-growing municipality sought after by investors, traders, and land developers.

The street dancing competition pictures out a sequence of events taking place in Manapla. “Dutang Natawhan” reveals the struggle of the ancestors to attain a better life... hunting, fishing, farming and barter trade. All those contributed to the growth and development of a shoreline “pueblo.” Crispula Santillan met the dashing fisherman from Guimaras.

Their love story and building-up of a strong Christian Community encourage the Manaplahanons to live a good life and be strong believers in God. Their strength was tested when the village was stricken by an unknown epidemic. Hundreds died and mourning was painful. This was dramatically shown in their dance.

In the midst of trials, the Manaplahanon did not forget the goodness of God. Their intense devotion to San Roque, the healer of God, made them pray fervently and encouraged others to be firm as shown in their procession of the image followed by lighted lanterns. The haunting San Roque chant brought hope to the afflicted.

The last storyline interpreted by the dancers is about “Sanyog Manapla.” Now, there is no stopping to quality economic life, excellent education, a massive infrastructure program, outstanding governance, meritorious public service, and superior health program, advancement in technology, fast-growing tourism, and valuable master development plan for the future.

Why should people go to Manapla? They can buy fresh fruits in the “tiyanggis” along the highway. There are facilities for recreation. The town is noted for its “puto” (rice cake). There are beaches nearby suited for family affairs. The vendors of “lamayo” (half-dried fish) are the ambassadors of Manapla who are bringing their product in Victorias, E.B. Magalona, Silay, and Talisay.

Congratulations Mayor Escalante and the LGU officials for realizing the dream of “Manang Pula” for the town named after her, Manapla!

More power Manaplahanons.
