24 rape suspects nabbed in first half

THE Davao City Police Office (DCPO) said at least 24 rape suspects were arrested and 73 cases were filed in court from January to June 2018.

DCPO director Police Senior Superintendent Alexander Tagum said based on their data, 19 cases were filed in the first quarter and 54 cases in the second quarter.

Tagum said there are still other victims who complained to their office but are skeptical in filing charges against their offenders, thus, some cases did not push through.

“We are still conducting follow-up investigation on those cases that were not filed since the victims are still not ready to face the rigors in the court proceedings. But we refer them all to the CSSDO (Davao City Social Service and Development Office) for intervention and counseling,” the DCPO chief said.

Tagum added that most of these cases were filed through regular proceedings and said that they are still waiting for their warrant of arrest from the court.

The data also showed that in the first quarter of 2018, authorities apprehended seven rape suspects and 17 in the second quarter.

Meanwhile, there are 48 suspects still at large in the first two quarters.

It can be noted that in the first half of the year, there were a total of 95 reported cases of rape incidents in the city.
