PNP intensifies checkpoint

THE top official of the Police Regional Office-Northern Mindanao (PRO)-Northern Mindanao has ordered a stricter and stringent security inspections across the region following the deadly blast in Isulan, Sultan Kudarat on Tuesday, August 28, that killed two people and wounded 35 others.

PRO-Northern Mindanao director Chief Superintendent Timoteo Pacleb has directed all police units to conduct thorough inspections in all strong checkpoints and border controls.

He also ordered the deployment of more personnel and K9 in places of convergence and other public places while station commanders and chiefs of police are made to closely supervise its personnel.

Pacleb also directed all men on the ground to keep watch on suspicious bags and foreign looking individuals.

The region's top cop also ordered for an intensified intelligence gathering and implement all standard operating procedures pertaining full alert.

"We express our sympathy to the victims and condemn this dastardly act of terrorism on the people of Isulan," Pacleb said.

"We continue to call on the public to support and cooperate with the security measures being implemented region-wide. These heartless terrorists will never succeed as long as we are united in our purpose to stop them," he added.

PRO-Northern Mindanao spokesperson Superintendent Surki Serenas said the bomb explosion in Isulan that happened during its 61st founding anniversary and Hamungaya Festival should not cause for worries of possible spillover of violence.

"It would be helpful to be vigilant. Be particularly watchful of suspicious packages and unattended luggage. Let us help by reporting it to authorities. No need for unnecessary worries," Serenas said.

He said there has been no information that Cagayan de Oro City's Higalaay Festival was among the terrorists' target.

He, however, said the suspension of mobile phone services has helped in the peaceful conduct of major fiesta events in the city.

"Isulan was really the target because they were also celebrating their Hamungaya Festival. However, we thank the NTC and the telcos for the support in the Cagayan de Oro fiesta. It really mattered,"Serenas said.
