VICE Mayor Daniel Farinas has pushed for the adoption of the draft resolution of the Baguio Centennial Commission recommending strategic actions for the rehabilitation and protection of the watersheds and forest reservations.

In a proposed resolution, Farinas said that city should support the measure as it addresses the same concern that the city has prioritized in its developmental thrusts which is the protection of watersheds and forest reservations.

"Environmental protection covers many sectors one of which is the protection of watersheds and forest reservations which the Baguio Centennial Commission committed to support by carrying out activities for the rehabilitation of watershed areas in the city," Farinas noted.

"With the support the City Government is realizing from concerned private and non-government sectors like the Baguio Centennial Commission, which dedicated their expertise and time for public service, the support of the City Government to the activities which they initiate is but a modest way to show the city's gratitude," he said.

In the draft resolution, the commission recommended the following strategic actions for the rehabilitation and protection of the watersheds and forest reservations in the city:

*Strengthening the system for monitoring and evaluation of plan performance in the area of watershed management and protection;

*Organize an inter-agency task force on informal settlers in forest reservations;

*Fast track the implementation of engineering interventions in critical watersheds;

*Enact and implement a Comprehensive Environmental Code for Baguio City;

*Initiate the organization of Forest Reserve Citizen Action Groups from among private volunteers, NGOs, civic organizations and business groups;

*Strengthen the Baguio Regreening Movement and expand its Eco-Walk project to cover as well other watersheds and forest reservations; and

*Prepare and implement an Integrated Watershed Management Plan for reach of the forest reservations in Baguio City.

Farinas' proposal will be discussed by the City Council soon. Aileen Refuerzo)
