NEGROS Oriental is the other half of Negros Island that also exudes of an exotic beauty that attracts travelers to its bosom. It is accessible by land from our province, so it is a good destination to explore. A distant relative of mine who I have not yet met, Daphne Kyara Marie Algarme, currently represents Negros Oriental in the search for Miss Millennial 2018 in a noontime variety show, where she will showcase the best of the province.

The good thing about Negros Oriental is that it has that quiet demeanor that travelers find charming, unlike the other more popular destinations which have become too crowded with tourists. There are various routes to get to Negros Oriental, and driving along the coastal area from its northernmost point to the southern part will give you breathtaking views of its clear blue seas.

Dumaguete City

I was in high school when I first went to Dumaguete City to do some research at the library of Silliman University. My succeeding trips to Dumaguete were to catch an ongoing trip to a nearby island. But the tranquil ambiance of the city has a relaxing effect on the soul whenever I arrive in Dumaguete. Walking under the canopy of trees in Silliman University, listening to the sound of motorbikes, and enjoying the soft breeze at the Boulevard can make you appreciate the local vibe. That’s not to mention the delectable food offered in most eateries.

Apo Island

Apo Island is a diver’s paradise. But even for a non-diver like me, the underwater world around Apo Island is so breathtaking just by snorkelling in its coral reefs and designated areas. The Apo Island Marine Reserve and Fish Sanctuary is home to thousands of marine life species. Did you know that it is a volcanic island? You can explore the entire island for a day and interact with the local villagers.

Manjuyod Sandbar and dolphin watching

We woke up early morning and left Dumaguete City and made our way to Bais where we boarded a boat to Manjuyod Sandbar. Midway through our boat ride, we were greeted by a group of dolphins that gleefully jumped out of the sea. It was delightful to watch them enjoy their natural habitat. As we drove farther, what seemed to be floating cottages appeared at the horizon. It was the Manjuyod Sandbar with villas on stilts. We occupied one of the villas and had a relaxing lunch surrounded by seawater. As time went by, the waters gradually lowered to uncover the white sand where these villas stood.

Other places of interest

There are still many places for me to explore in Negros Oriental. I have been to Canlaon City, but I still have to enter the caves of Mabinay or visit the twin lakes in Sibulan or trek to one of the magnificent waterfalls in the province. The place beckons, and I hope to respond to its call very soon.*
